Year in Review - 2021

Over the past year, No Flood Florida has made great progress in the development of our business process. Throughout 2020, we refined our GIS processing and captured over 30 counties, equating to nearly 3.5 million properties. We have made some additional progress on this, adding a few more counties and now have nearly 4 million properties in our database. See the progress made for the State of Florida below:

Our goal remains - to provide the residents of Florida the most accurate and up-to-date understanding of flood risk. We ingest the FEMA effective floodplains, detailed terrain information, as well as parcel and structure information related to the property of interest. With these foundational datasets we are able to determine a properties relationship with the FEMA high-risk floodplain as well as identify opportunities to challenge FEMA's floodplain mapping through the process of the Letter of Map Amendment or LOMA.

In 2021, we received around 400 inquiries on our website, www.nofloodflorida.com. Most of our users come to us when they are notified by their mortgage company that flood insurance is now required. For coastal areas of Florida, many counties saw map changes in mid 2021 - see past blog post. These map changes triggered new, mandatory flood insurance requirements, of which resident's were typically not too happy with. We had to reprocess several counties during 2021 to keep our data up-to-date. Here is a brief summary of the most active counties to utilize our LOMA Screening Tool or inquire our flood risk services:

Although we haven't added many more properties or counties to our database in 2021, we were able to implement many other business process related workflows to help assist with customer acquisition, management, and internal organization.

Website Updates

During 2021, I transitioned between roles as a water resources engineer to a web developer - becoming more familiar with a few key languages and resources (JavaScript/CSS/HTML), Gatsby/React, Firebase, and Github. Through these tools, we were able to develop enhanced internal tools that are accessible on our website for registered users. Figuring out how to allow a user to register, create a unique API key, and authenticate that user was quite a task... but we powered through. Additional updates to the website include more detailed information related to:

Customer Management

No Flood Florida hired a student intern (Sophia Hower) from the University of South Florida to help with marketing and customer management/engagement efforts. She has been doing a great job! In addition, we started using a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system to stay on track with our customer interactions. A detailed workflow was established to help increase our ability to convert customer inquires to sales. Sales sequences and automatic emails containing relevant information were also set up to help increase customer engagement.

Internal Organization

Our internal efforts to keep everyone up-to-date with our customer interactions was accomplished through the use of Python and Excel based tools. We are able to download any new interactions with our contact forms and populate a Google Sheet for others to collaboratively view/interact with. Other Python scripts were created to develop maps and populate/override details of the CRM.

Goals for 2022

  • Continue to expand our coverage of properties throughout Florida
  • Integrate our data into Florida based MLS companies
  • Continue to refine our customer acquisition workflow
  • Provide more information for Florida residents to better understand their flood risk and any opportunities to reduce/eliminate flood insurance
  • Better understand the Risk Rating 2.0 process, methodology and impact to Florida homeowners

Thank you to all our customers and users of our website. We are hopeful for another year of working with Florida residents to better understand flood risk and identify any opportunities to help with flood insurance premiums.
